Shafts and confined spaces Fall protection systems for manhole entrances and confined spaces

In industry, civil engineering, mining, and sewer systems, maintenance and inspection work must be performed in locations that are accessible only through a manhole. At these access points, appropriate protection against falling into the depths must be provided for the people working there, such as maintenance technicians or service personnel.

Due to the limited space available, these tasks are usually performed by a single person. To ensure safe access to the shaft, a fall protection system must therefore be selected that both provides safety for the worker and allows for rescue by a second person.

When it comes to safety solutions for manhole access, INNOTECH offers a wide variety of fall protection systems, ensuring that maintenance work can be carried out safely.

Details on securing manhole entrances

Single anchor points (EAPs) offer a practical solution for securing manhole entrances. They are classified as individual protection solutions and can only be used in combination with personal protective equipment (PPE). For securing manhole entrances, for example, the EAP-TEL-10 is available as a single anchor point from INNOTECH. It is reusable and portable, meaning it can be easily transported or stowed in a backpack. The EAP-TEL-20-VZ bracket serves as the base for using the aforementioned EAP.

The EAP-TEL-10 is extendable and can be installed without tools. This safety solution is recommended when multiple shafts are included in a maintenance plan. To perform a descent, the person in the hazard zone attaches themselves using the appropriate fall arrest device to one of the two anchorage eyes on the telescoping pole of the single anchor point. Quick and easy installation of a mobile fall protection system is advantageous because it saves time and allows the technician to focus their attention on the actual maintenance task.

Mitigating Hazards at Manholes with Personal Protective Equipment

Shafts can vary in depth. Accordingly, the risk of injury in the event of a fall also increases. A false sense of safety, often referred to as “false safety,” can arise, in part, from the presence of a ladder. However, during a descent into a shaft, there is always a risk of falling due to slipping, loss of balance, disorientation, or missteps caused by inattention. These risks must be prevented using the safety measures described above.

With the aforementioned personal protection solutions, the hazard zone at the manhole entrance is completely neutralized, and personnel performing maintenance work in or near the manholes are reliably protected against falls (from a height). Appropriate expert training ensures the correct use of our safety solutions. For this reason, INNOTECH offers a wide range of training courses through INNO|school.

All these measures ensure the necessary safety. In addition, the aforementioned personal protection solutions are designed so that a rescue by a second person on site can be carried out at any time.

Benefits of a Fall Protection System for Shaft Entrances

  • Reliable fall protection in hazardous manhole areas through customized safety solutions combined with personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safe access to the shaft via individual protection solutions that, due to their design, can also be used temporarily
  • High degree of mobility when performing various maintenance tasks thanks to the ability to quickly and easily attach the single anchor points to the shaft using a pre-installed bracket
  • Easier entry and exit, as well as continuously safe descent and ascent from the shaft, through the combination of the TAURUS-SCE-10 with the TAURUS-VERTIKAL

Challenges

  • Access via the shaft: Entering and exiting the shaft poses a hazard of falling (from a height). Therefore, fall protection should be provided immediately at the shaft entrance.
  • Confined spaces: The typically confined space, both at the shaft entrance and when working inside the shaft itself, requires a flexible and space-saving safety system.
  • Recovery/Rescue: In the event of an incident or emergency involving a person inside the shaft, it must be possible to perform a safe recovery or rescue at any time.
