Skylight
Fall-through protection with our individually adaptable systems
BARRIER guardrail system
On a roof, skylights represent a source of danger which is easy to overlook. BARRIER-SKYLIGHT is a superimposed load system and is individually adjustable.

SHOW SYSTEM
Falling through skylights or strip lights is a topical danger situation in business and public sectors. In most cases, the apparently safe covering of the skylight is not secure against either stepping or falling through. This applies to both existing and newly planned skylights and strip lights, which are being installed increasingly. With the permanent and temporary solutions from INNOTECH® you ensure the safety of all persons who find themselves adjacent to skylights and who, for example, perform servicing and maintenance tasks.

Lighting elements are planned on roof surfaces so that light and fresh air can enter the spaces underneath, and so that smoke can escape in an emergency. Inattention or tripping can cause someone to break through the covering of a skylight and, if there is no protection, to fall a long distance. Serious injuries generally result.
This dangerous situation can arise for any person who finds himself on a roof. Skylights are found mostly on industrial warehouses, shopping centres, residential buildings, etc., for example where maintenance tasks have to be performed by specialists.
But lighting elements with coverings are also found at lower levels, such as underground car parks. The illusion of safety created by the covering of the skylight is a subject of concern in this application area. Considering the skylight as a safe seating surface, or stepping or jumping on it through negligent behaviour can result in accidents, because skylights have usually not been designed for this.
As well as unintended dangerous behaviour, brought about by the illusion of safety, tripping and slipping represent a permanent source of danger for skylights – for everybody, all of the time.
Special case – fall-through because of an open smoke extractor
Falling through an open skylight represents a further danger situation. Here the illusion of safety is of lesser significance, compared with unintended tripping or slipping. In this case too, an INNOTECH® skylight protection system protects against a fall-through having severe consequences.
Personal protection from INNOTECH® for skylights
It is therefore necessary to ensure that skylights are protected, and this is achieved through protection in the light well (collective protection). The following solutions from INNOTECH® for skylights and strip lights can be either temporary or permanent fall protection systems, depending on requirements.
- LIGHT and LIGHT-FLEX skylight protection systems: The LIGHT skylight protection system and the LIGHT-FLEX skylight protection net are installed inside the skylight or strip light, and provide fall-through protection there.
- BARRIER guardrail system: This guardrail system, designed specially for skylights and strip lights, is positioned around the danger area, directly on the roof, and provides circumferential collective protection against falling through the skylight.
- EAP-MOBI:EAP-MOBI skylight protection can be used as temporary collective protection or as a potential single anchor point (EAP). If the latter is the case, then personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at the same time.
Benefits of a fall protection system for skylights and strip lights
- Protection of life and prevention of injuries resulting from falling through the closed or open covering.
- Real safety instead of the illusion of safety: The consequences of unintentional incorrect behaviour, such as sitting or standing on a skylight, cease to be a risk to life.
- Protected even without expert knowledge: Collective protection provides safety for everybody, not just for trained experts.
- Legal requirements for protection against falling through lighting elements are fulfilled.
Challenges for personal safety on skylights
- Statics of existing roofs: Roofs can quickly reach their load limits because of age, heavy snow loads, and/or unplanned components such as photovoltaic and air-conditioning systems, etc. If this happens, then above all the LIGHT and LIGHT-FLEX solutions are appropriate.
- Available space for protecting the open cover of a smoke extractor: Objects on the roof, such as ventilation units, air-conditioning systems, etc. located near a skylight, can hinder the installation of a guardrail. It must be possible to open the smoke extraction flap completely. Suitable solutions for this are the LIGHT and LIGHT-FLEX skylight protection systems, which are installed inside the skylight.
- Material fatigue of the flashing: Older skylights may no longer provide the necessary stability for mounting a fall protection system on the flashing. If the skylight cannot be repaired, then the solution could be a special installation or a BARRIER guardrail system held in place by concrete weights on the roof.
